Ikebana is Japanese flowerarrangement. The Dutch Chapter of Ikebana International is founded 10 September 1981 as Chapter #215. This already indicates the existence of many chapters all over the world who together constitute the international community devoted to Japanese flowerarrangement. In Ikebana International the different schools of Japanese flowerarrangement are represented from the most traditional to the most modern school.
The motto of Ikebana International is:
“Friendship Through Flowers”.
The word ikebana is derived from the Japanese words ikeru (=life, create) and hana (=flower). Ikebana is the old art arriving in Japan in the 6th century a.d. together with Buddhism from China. The Japanese priest Ono-no-Imoko, living as a hermit at a lake near Kyoto, probably was the first who arranged flowers and branches in the temple. Other priests followed his example and this became the origin of the Ikenobo-school. (Ikenobo means “hut near the lake”).

The import of western flowers in Japan at the end of the 19th century, inspired Unshin Ohara to make arrangements in low containers using fakir-beds (kenzans). This was the origin of the Ohara-school.

In 1927 the Sogetsu-school was originated. The founder Sofu Teshigahara gave a new impulse to new developments, enabling modern and abstract arrangements. Sofu also was an wellknown sculptor whose work one can find in musea all over the world.

In 1937 the Ichiyo-school was founded by Mrs Ichiyo Kasuya. The specific style in this school is graceful and reflects the changes in our time as likewise can be observed in architecture.
From the above, it shows that Ikebana has developed from a religious art to a more general art in which everybody can express himself. By study and excercise one develops a skilful eye for lines, balance and space
Still there is a fundamental difference between the Western and the Japanese way to arrange flowers. A Western person tends to fill space and a Japanese person tries to create space. While a Western person arranges quantity and colour of the flowers, a Japanese person looks at the lines while the flower may serve as colouraccent. With a few simple branches and a single flower one can make his own creation.
Ikebana makes us more concious of the beauty of nature which inspires us to make arrangements. When in nature, the ikebanist is always looking for new plant-material. Ikebana is a good exercise in patience and concentration. It takes much attention to bend a branch in the right shape or to trim the branch in the right form. During working on an arrangement one comes to rest in the busy environment of our existance. Ikebana is a fascinating way of selfexpression.
